Funded programs increase bilingual, culturally-relevant care (screening, diagnosis, education and treatment) for Latinos affected by chronic stress, mental or behavioral disorders or other major health common conditions that reduce the quality and length of life.

Increasing access to mental/behavioral health

  • Family Counseling Center of St. Paul’s Church

    Provides bilingual and culturally-sensitive family counseling services to Latino families in the Wilmington area. Expansion of qualified counseling staff in new office space supports care and education to reduce multiple stressors experienced.

  • National Alliance on Mental Illness, Delaware (NAMI Delaware)

    Hispanic Services Initiative has expanded education, referral and support services to people affected by mental illness throughout Delaware. Bilingual staff provide services, reduce stigma, access to care.

  • Sussex County Health Coalition

    Engages county-wide health nonprofits and health systems to identify needs and collaborative approaches to improve family health. School-based mental/behavioral health committee increasing programs (anti-bullying, drug/alcohol addiction and suicide prevention) and mental health care access –focus on Latino children.

    Four-year (2014-18) effort to increase the number and quality of bilingual mental health providers in Delaware through partial tuition support for graduate school Arsht-Cannon Scholars.

    Promotoras for Healthy Families (Healthy Latin Families Program) identifies and assesses family members who do not have a primary care physician and refers members for health screenings, immunizations, care, education, counseling in community.

    Comprehensive, statewide program that increases immediate access to all women with the most effective IUDs and implants to prevent unplanned pregnancies.

    Provides free eye exams and free eyeglasses to students in low-income communities throughout Delaware supported by a mobile eye clinic. Vision improves reading, learning, attention and behavior.
