What’s New at the Latin Center? May 2015
Mil Gracias to the Arsht-Cannon Fund for its generous and continued support of the English as a Second Language programs at the LACC and the Hispanic Community throughout Delaware. Many thanks to the Darden Foundation and the Olive Garden Restaurants for a second year of funding to support Youth Programs. More thanks to Guadalupe Mandujano from Extasis Beauty Salon in Wilmington, DE, who provided free haircuts to women in the Families in Control support group for victims of domestic violence on May 5, 2015, as a Mother’s Day gift for the women. Funding for the Families in Control Program to Combat Domestic Violence is provided by the Delaware Criminal Justice Council. 2015 Hispanic Student Recognition Program: More than 400 students, families, community members, and district and school staff attended the Hispanic Student Recognition Program (HSRP) on Saturday, April 13, 2015, at the Latin American Community Center in Wilmington. . Keynote Speaker was The Hon. Maria Cabrera, the first Hispanic woman to be elected to Wilmington City Council. Many thanks to 2015 HSRP sponsors: Wells Fargo, Delaware Hispanic Commission and United Way of Delaware along with our supporters: El Tiempo Hispano, Tech Strategies Group, and Michael J. Hare. Also thank you to the HSRP selection committee, which included representatives from Wells Fargo, Dow Chemical, AstraZeneca, DuPont, Arsht Cannon Fund, Rodel Foundation, Delaware Council on Gambling Problems, Delaware Art Museum, Delaware Arts Alliance, Delaware Center for the Contemporary Arts and The Law Offices of Doroshow, Pasquale, Krawitz & Bhaya. Minority Health Month Fair, The LACC and the Department of Public Health (DPH) will collaborate on providing our community with health resources and screenings, Saturday, May 23, 2015, 10 a.m.-2 p.m., at the LACC. There will be free food, music, health resources and screenings, Zumba and a Moon Bounce for the children. The program starts on Tuesday, May 21, 2015, at 5 p.m. for men who want to participate in a support group setting with other victims. Cinco de Mayo More than 200 people attended the LACC’s Cinco de Mayo Celebration on Friday, May 1, 2015, hosted by the Prevention Promoters Program. There were games, fun, food, lots of giveaways, and even a mariachi band! Thanks to Safe Kids Delaware and the Delaware Office of Highway Safety for helping make this event a success! The LACC Summer Day Camp for ages 5 to 11 starts June 15, 2015. The theme of the 2015 STEAM camp is Biology. STEAM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Math. Thanks to support from United Way, campers will also participate in Reading is Fundamental. Each week youth will read books that complement their weekly biology lessons. Books will be chosen from Reading is Fundamental’s 2013-2014 reading list of multicultural STEM books. Contact: Edgar Martinez, [email protected] More gratitude for Arsht-Cannon Fund support for the Arts.Teachers from the Wilmington Children’s Choir visit the LACC after school program each week to teach children how to sing and read music. Children are learning Dominican folk songs and African American spirituals, and how to sing in a choir. The Wilmington Ballet also brought four teenage dancers to the LACC to demonstrate basic ballet exercises and steps before an audience of elementary and middle school youth. Boys in the audience asked the dancers how ballet could improve their ability to play sports. The Wilmington Ballet will offer free ballet lessons at the LACC.
